Data Management Requests
These requests deal with the way data records are entered, stored,
maintained, and reported from. Since UNCLE will accept data in an open format or
"card image" format (80 position records), all of the references to data fields can be interpreted as locations or
card columns.
Options
Options give you extreme flexibility and control over the appearance of processed tables.
There are many things that UNCLE does automatically such as printing frequencies
and vertical column percents, but through the use of options you can suppress or alter
these functions, or request additional functions. Generally, options are
used to change the appearance of tables or to request calculations.
Qualifications
UNCLE qualifications are used to specify how frequencies are accumulated in
table cells. They are also used for data cleaning.
Standard Qualifications
The most commonly used
qualification is made up of one or more terms.
A term has the function of relating a data position to a specific code
("punch"). Every term consists of
three elements: position, relation, and code.
Remember, position can be one or more record positions or field locations, and
codes
may be values or numeric codes, alphabetic codes, zone codes, or blanks.
Special
Qualifications
Some of the special
qualifications return numeric values to the cells they cover and others
are true/false. True/false
qualifications can be combined with other terms and may be used wherever a
simple term such as 6-1 could be used.
Also, true/false qualifications may be used as table and session
qualifications, but qualifications returning numeric values are restricted to
row and column qualifications.
General UNCLE Requests
These requests are used in UNCLE processing, and are not directly related to
table maintenance or data management. SET requests make temporary changes
that terminate with the end of the UNCLE session. SET requests stored in startup
files are processed automatically.
Table Maintenance Requests
These requests are used to create new tables and to modify stored
tables. Tables are used to provide UNCLE with information needed to
process a given question, as well as for data cleaning, weighting, and run
streams.
Title Control Words
These control words are used to format subsequent portions of a title (e.g.
bolding, underlining, and changing point size), or to substitute a changing
value (e.g. date and time). More than one control word may appear in the
same title, as well as multiple occurrences of the same title control word. |
