USort is designed for use with the UNCLE tabulation system and its data entry program.  As a result, its defaults are the UNCLE defaults: PC Column Binary format, with record lengths of 80 positions (also known as card image).  Sorted output files have the same format as the input file, and the folder for the new file is the same as the input file’s.  Of course, any of these defaults may be changed to suit your needs.

And the input data need not originate with our data entry program.  Fixed-position IBM Column Binary or ASCII data files from any source may be used as input for sorting and format conversion, and ASCII delimited files can also be input for conversion to fixed-position data files.

USort’s features include:

  • sorting on as many levels of data fields as required

  • concurrent sorting of multiple input files

  • sorting of files with records of different lengths

  • input and output files of fixed-position PC Column Binary (UNCLE’s default), IBM Column Binary, or ASCII

  • generation of fixed-position data files and documentation from delimited ASCII text files

  • intuitive graphical user interface

  • format conversion from input file(s) to output file: from either column binary format to the other, or either column binary format to ASCII

  • input file(s) of up to 2.1 billion (2,147,000,000) bytes in size (the equivalent of 1,073,500,000 column binary data positions, or 13,418,750 eighty-position records).  Record length limit of 32,767 positions.

  • Go option for command-line execution of sort routines enables sorting as part of an executable run stream within UNCLE

  • progress bar and text indicate current status of the sorting process

  • Save sort and data conversion parameters for future reuse or editing (in .ust file)

  • on-line help
